Approximately 40 teens and other community members participated in LCCC Teen Leadership Council’s (TLC) 4th annual Vision 5K Run/Walk on May 20th. This event is designed to promote economic transformation of west Louisville’s Russell neighborhood, in conjunction with the city’s Choice Neighborhood Initiative.
With strong corporate support from Zirmed, the event allows TLC members to use their leadership skills and talents to benefit the Russell neighborhood.
The event featured a guest appearances from “Ms. Kentucky”, Tyiana Thompson and 4th district councilwoman, Barbara Sexton Smith.
Objectives of the Vision 5K are to: empower youth to have a voice in local community development affairs; help the broader community to learn more about assets and opportunities within the Russell neighborhood; and attract citizens from all over Louisville to participate in a fun, family-friendly health and wellness event.
“Here at Zirmed, we love interacting with youth and look to help them raise awareness in their communities. We had them (TLC) in for a tour of our company and hosted a couple of their planning meetings. They are very engaged. We are committed to volunteerism and were able to take on the TLC 5K because we believe the event is important step toward improving conditions in Russell,” said Data Analyst Paula Wimsatt at Zirmed.
LCCC CEO Kevin Fields took part in the morning’s run and came in 4th place. “I love to encourage health and wellness goals in our community; and, our teens put me to the test, so I had to show them I could still run” he joked.
This was the fourth year of the Vision 5K Run/Walk and expansion plans are already underway for next year. To get involved with TLC’s event planning committee, contact Deborah Grant at LCCC, (502) 583-8821 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
